Do you remember your first musical instrument? I'll bet if you weren't given a toy drum you made one. I was recalling how my children used my cooking instruments to make music as I used a cake knife to divide up a freshly baked chocolate cheesecake.
I'm about to enjoy coffee and cake as I am writing.
What more can I add to increase the pleasure I gain from my work?
We are never too young to be introduced to the wonder of sounds strung to together to create melodies and rhythm. If I had teenagers today, I'd be taking them shopping to open a new adventure of music into their lives. They have never needed the release of music more.
Nowadays, children are more likely to be given a computer than a musical instrument. This is a bittersweet change from when I was young when more children received a basic introduction into how to play a musical instrument. Nowadays, most children's introduction to music is from watching television shows. They see their music idols, but don’t think they could ever be like them.
Learning how to create music is still a concept that crosses a lot of people’s minds, we would all love to have the skill. The inner urge to create music is as natural to us as a bird's need to sing. Many of us don't try, as music creation, if you have never had the opportunity of doing it, feels intimidating, even frightening, and just too hard.
I knew that feeling. I grew up surrounded by musicians in the family. My sole-supporting parent considered music a luxury that she couldn't afford to offer me. she even turned down offers from my uncle to teach me music. Perhaps she was afraid I might join the ranks of a poorly paid musician.
