Sadly, there’s no denying it. We live in an increasingly volatile and scary world. We live in fear. Today I’d like to touch on just a few of the things we are afraid of and why being afraid is not the way to be. We cannot allow that pernicious thing called fear to destroy our happiness and our well-being. We are meant to have an amazing life and paralyzing fear can take that life away from us.
It is so easy to allow simple psychological fear to become the ruling paradigm in our lives. These are often fears that have been drilled into us over the years by the people we most trust to guide our lives; our parents, our siblings, our teachers, our friends, our colleagues and YES, more and more today, the news media and that dangerous, little thing called Social Media. Just like Pavlov’s dogs, we have indeed been well trained. Many of these fears have become so ingrained in our subconscious that they can and do stop us from doing things that we WANT to do and things that we SHOULD do if we want to grow as individuals and experience the amazing things that life has in store for us. What are the three biggest fears that hold us back and stop us from achieving our own greatness?
Fear of Failure
1/ Fear of Failure:
This is definitely a biggie for most of us. Just think back on how many times you’ve thought of a great idea, perhaps a money-making idea, or some new hobby or activity you’d like to take up. Your initial reaction is probably, something along the lines of; “what a brilliant idea – that’s awesome – yeah, I can do that”. And then what happens? We all have this insane little bugger in our head called an ego. It immediately starts chattering away to you telling you things like; “What makes you think you can do that? Who do you think you are? Remember last time you tried something new? God, wasn’t that a total flop? No, you stick to what you know. No point in risking failure. Hey, it’s okay to be a loser and you’re bound to fail anyway, so why bother.”
Why on earth are we so afraid of failure? Surely, failure is the first step on the road to success? I well recall famous chef Heston Blumenthal expounding on failure, when he said. “I learnt more from my one restaurant that failed than I ever did from all the ones that were successful.” The simple fact is, people who avoid failure, also avoid success.
Remember this; even if you fail at something, you will achieve immense satisfaction from having tried something new and you will have a lot more experience than you have now. The mistakes you made in this attempt will serve you well in the future. You were born to EXCEL and you were born to be GREAT, so don’t let a fear of failure stop you from achieving your full potential.
Fear of Ridicule
2/ Fear of Ridicule:
What will people say if I try this? This is a common fear people hold onto when they consider trying something new. In this new, highly-connected world I get the feeling that for some people, “appearing” to be happy and successful to others is their definition of success. This is ludicrous! Success and happiness start and end with love – the love YOU have for YOURSELF. If you truly love and believe in yourself as a unique individual with talents unlike anyone who has lived before, or will ever live, what does it really matter what others think of you? If we truly love ourselves and embrace our uniqueness with true passion, we do not need validation from others.
YOU need to fulfil YOUR dreams and desires, not someone else’s perception of who or what you should be and that someone else DOES include those closest to you, your spouse or partner, your parents, your children. They are not you and they cannot be you. Listen to their advice, by all means, but do what your heart tells you and always, “To thine own self-be true”
Fear of the Unknown
3/ Fear of the Unknown (Fear of the Future):
The most important thing to remember is that the ONLY thing you can do to control the future is what you do TODAY – right here, right now. If you focus your mind on the problems and the pitfalls that tomorrow may bring, that is exactly what you will bring to yourself, those problems and those pitfalls. We need to accept that we live in the PRESENT, not the past and not the future. What you think about and do today, will determine what your future manifests in your life.
I don’t believe in luck or coincidence in any way shape or form. I believe that everything we experience in life has been brought about by our own thoughts and our own actions in the past and the present. I strongly believe, that no matter how hard the circumstances we find ourselves in, we are exactly where we are meant to be, doing exactly what we are meant to be doing, with the people we are meant to be doing it with.
Don’t let the fear of the future cripple your ambitions and dreams. Embrace the present and be the person you want to be TODAY, and tomorrow will take care of itself.
I’ll end this today, with a quote from my favourite author, Rhonda Byrne. “You were meant to have an amazing life – you were not born to struggle... what then would be the point of your life.” I agree with that sentiment absolutely. We all have within us a potential to achieve greatness, but if we allow fear to limit our choices we are denying ourselves the opportunity to be the very best we can ever be.
Choose to be FEARLESS, embrace the opportunities and follow your dreams.
